1
Become comfortable roller blading in one direction on a flat, hard surface like a city sidewalk. The ability to steer straight on roller blades is a prerequisite to attempting any tricks.
-
2
After you can propel yourself where you want to go, attempt a leap. Get some momentum going, crouch down, and jump up into the air. Land evenly on both blades and continue to roll.
-
3
Skate on one foot. Build up some speed, and carefully lift your non-dominant foot straight up. Roll for a time on one blade before replacing the airborne foot on the ground.

Skating backwards is difficult, but impressive and rewarding. Begin by slowly skating forward. Execute a small hop, and during the hop rotate your body a full 180 degrees. When you land, you will be rolling backwards. To build up speed from there, wave your feet together, first to one side, then to the other. This takes practice, but once you learn the knack, you will never forget it.

The final trick is an impressive way to change direction. Start by skating in the normal fashion. If you want to turn right, lift the left foot up and over the right foot, and put it down pointing in the direction you wish to turn. Roll, lift the right foot over the left, and repeat, lifting the left foot over the right. This will allow you to turn quickly and fluidly. If you want to turn right, simply reverse the feet.
