How to Skate With Heelies

Maybe you've seen kids gliding around town while wearing sneakers. These combination skates/shoes, called Heelys, require a slightly different skating technique. Heelys are a brand of sneakers that have a wheel embedded in the sole of each shoe. Available for both children and adults, these skates allow you to walk, run and skate on a moment's notice. The wheels can even be removed so that the shoe becomes a regular sneaker. With a little practice, skating with Heelys can be fun.

Using your partner as support, place one foot in front of the other. Lift the toes of your front foot and balance on the wheel.

    • 2

Lift your toes on your back foot so that you are now balancing on both wheels. Continue to hold on to your partner for support.

    • 3

Roll in this position as your partner walks alongside you.

    • 4

Once you feel comfortable, you can skate alone. Put one foot in front of you, placing your weight on it.

    • 5

Take another step. Tip the toes of your front foot so that you are balancing on the wheel.

    • 6

Kick off and balance on both wheels. Always place one foot in front of the other while skating.

    • 7

To stop rolling, lean back on one heel and allow the shoe portion to drag along the surface. If you need to stop quickly, lean forward so that your shoe has contact with the floor. Jog or run until you lose momentum.
