1
Get skates that fit. Make sure the laces and buckles are snug. Wear protective clothing such as wrist guards, knee and elbow pads and a helmet.
-
2
Practice skating on grass or carpet before going out on the pavement. This is to improve balance. Begin on a flat surface like a quiet street, an empty parking lot, or tennis and basketball courts.
-
3
Stand with your feet parallel about shoulder-width or 4 to 6 inches apart. Hold arms out slightly in front, bend your knees slightly and distribute your weight evenly on both legs.
-
4
Practice braking. Keep skates parallel. Slowly put pressure on the heel to brake. Push brake skate forward and keep most of your weight on your rear leg. Another way to stop is to drag your back foot behind you to slow and stop.
-
5
Stand up on your skates. Kneel and push up to a sitting position and then stand up. To keep your balance better, bend your knees. This lowers the center of gravity and makes it easier to balance.
-
6
Take off. Put one foot in front and the other to the side. Push off with your side foot and glide forward. To pick up more speed, crouch lower and pick your feet up more.
