How to Put Together a Skateboard

Buying a skateboard is somewhat akin to buying a computer. You could buy the whole thing at once, but you quickly realize there is a need for customization. That is why many skaters constantly tinker with their board by changing out the wheels and trucks and sanding down the board itself. Here are some tips for adding your own special touches to a skateboard.

      Get the board, which is sometimes called a deck. Inspect it for any cracks or oddities. If it is warped, try sanding it down.

      Install the trucks, which are the metal or plastic fixtures that attach the board to the wheels. Most decks have pre-drilled holes for the trucks. If not, a general rule of thumb is to install trucks 4 inches from the front of the board and about an inch from the curve in the tail.

      Push your bearings into the wheels and then place a washer over each bearing. Keep in mind that bearings and washers should come with each wheel set.

      Take the wheels and attach them to the trucks. Cap them with a lug nut, but don't tighten the wheels yet.

      Glide the board on a flat surface to see if it rolls smooth. You may have to adjust the trucks and wheels to make it more even.

      Tighten the wheels slowly to avoid damaging the lug nuts.
