How to Steer a Skateboard

Skateboarding has turned into one of the most popular pastimes; it's hard to find someone who doesn't at least know the basics. But, if you don't know anyone who's a "skater", you can learn one of the most basic skating moves, turning! Follow these simple steps and you'll be skating around the block in no time!

Instructions

    • 1

Find a surface that will prevent your skateboard from rolling too much. A level slab of carpet works best.

    • 2

Stand on your skateboard. Your feet should be about shoulder length apart and knees slightly bent, make sure you feel stable though. It is best to position your feet over the screws that hold the trucks or axels to the board.

    • 3

Practice leaning forward and backward to get a feel for your skateboard. Push down with your toes and then lean back on your heels. If you feel that the board is tilting too much or not enough you may need to adjust the tightness of the bolt on the axels.

    • 4

Move to concrete one you feel comfortable rocking back and forth. Push yourself off, and practice turning while rolling. Gradually increase speed until you feel comfortable.

    • 5

Once you feel comfortable turning by leaning you will want to try doing kick turns. These turns are a bit more complicated. You will need to push down on the tail while lifting your front foot and moving it in the direction you want to go. Be careful when practicing this as it can be easy to loose your balance and fall off of the skateboard.
