How to Repair a Plastic Belly Pan

Protect your snowmobile's engine by repairing the plastic belly pan. A belly pan is used to prevent snow and other debris from entering and damaging the engine of a snowmobile. Fixing a small crack is relatively simple, but if the belly pan has many large cracks or has sustained serious damage, it should be replaced. Get the most out of your plastic belly pan and save money by repairing small cracks.

Instructions

    • 1

Find the belly pan on your snowmobile. The belly pan is a plastic cover that fits over the engine of the snowmobile. The belly pan may vary in color depending on the snowmobile.

    • 2

Find the cracks you wish to repair. Only small cracks should be repaired. Replace the belly pan if it has been seriously damaged to avoid any problems with debris entering the engine.

    • 3

Drill four holes on each side of the crack (eight total) using a 1/8-inch drill bit. The holes should be about half and inch from the crack and should run parallel to it.

    • 4

Lace the cable tie (sometimes called a zip tie) through each of the holes. Start with a hole on the top left or right and zigzag the cable tie as if you were lacing shoelaces in a shoe.

    • 5

Thread the cable tie back through the first hole and secure it. A cable tie is secured by threading the pointed tip through the case and pulling it tightly. The cable tie prevents the crack from getting larger, so pull the cable tie as tightly as possible.
