The Snowmobile Trails in Winnebago County, Illinois
-
Tri-County Trail Alliance
-
Winnebago County is part of the Tri-County Trail Alliance, a partnership formed of riders based in Winnebago County along with three other counties: Ogla, Lee and Stephenson (yes, for a total of four counties). This gives those riding out of Winnebago County a larger swath of maintained trail to ride on. The riding season for the Trail Alliance trails is fairly short at three months (December 15 through March 15) and requires four inches of snow on the trail. Anything less than that can cause damage to the trail area and poor riding conditions once new snow has fallen.
Winnebago Sno-Gliders
-
While snowmobiling is a winter recreational pursuit, the work of making new trails and maintaining existing ones takes place during the summer and fall months, when snowmobiling is a exciting thing to look forward to or remember. Winnebago County is home to the Winnebago Sno-Gliders, who make snowmobiling a year-round affair by securing farmers' permission to ride in certain areas of the county and build structures, like bridges, in order to make riding safe for everyone. The Sno-Gliders are part of the Tri-County Alliance, and you can get trail maps at Winnebago area retailers for a dollar donation.
Marked Trails
-
Snowmobile trails in Winnebago County cover the entire area, from north to south and east to west. While you can ride in ditches, they can often be unsafe because of culverts and unburied sign posts. For this reason, the main trails in Winnebago County are marked. All rules of the Tri-County Alliance should be observed when riding these trails, including the seasonal time period and snow depth requirements. Failure to comply with the local snow restrictions could leave your party stranded in a cornfield or have you riding through hazardous ditch line. Trails run to and from areas like Byron, Leaf River and German Valley in the south of the county and Rockford and Roscoe in the north. There are areas on the trails for refueling and grabbing a bite to eat.
