Snowmobiling with children can be a fun family activity. But snowmobiling can be a dangerous sport too, and extra precautions must be taken when riding with children. But with the proper safety equipment and procedures, children can safely enjoy snowmobiling with a trusted adult.

      Know that the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children under 16 years of age should not be permitted to drive a snowmobile, and children under 6 should not even be passengers. Smaller snowmobiles designed for children aren't any safer, as it doesn't change the fact that children still have undeveloped motor skills and field of vision capabilities as compared to an adult.

      Have all snowmobile drivers and riders wear a helmet, as head injuries are the leading cause of death related to snowmobile accidents. This rule should be enforced for every snowmobiling trip, no matter how short or how gentle the terrain.

      Wear protective clothing such as waterproof jackets and goggles that are designed for snowmobiling. This special clothing will protect you from twigs and branches as you ride.

      Snowmobile with children as passengers only on well marked, established trails. The majority of accidents are caused by a collision with a fixed object, such as a tree stump, that's been covered by new snow. Know the terrain before you ride, particularly if you're going to have a child as a passenger.
