Surfboard Wax Removal

Waxing a surfboard before going out on the waves is essential, especially if you want to stay on the board. However, over time, a buildup of wax may occur. This buildup may not be doing the job anymore and may contain particles or may be a bit dirty. Removing the wax takes a bit of elbow grease and some time, but is essential when taking proper care of your board.

Instructions

    • 1

Set up your work area in the direct sunlight, and put down a large plastic sheet or a drop cloth.

    • 2

Place the board flat, waxed side up onto a raised surface. If you can't put it on a raised surface, remove the fins, if possible and place the board directly onto the drop cloth.

    • 3

Let the board sit for about 20 minutes in the sunlight. It will help the wax melt and loosen up. If you are

unable to place the board in the sunlight, turn a hairdryer on low and pass it over the board a couple of times.

    • 4

Feel the wax. If it's sticky, start removing it.

    • 5

Take your credit card or plastic scraping tool and hold it to the board at about a 45-degree angle. With

pressure, push the plastic against the wax to make it come off. Repeat this process, until you have covered your entire board. Clean the wax periodically off of your plastic scraper.

    • 6

Dispose of all the wax you have scraped off.

    • 7

Put about a tablespoon of the denatured alcohol onto a clean rag. Wipe the rag over your board, like you were wiping dust off a surface. If you are using the alcohol, be sure to do so in a well-ventilated area.
