How to Qualify for a NASCAR Sprint Cup Race in Phoenix

Phoenix International Raceway is one of the multiple speedways scheduled to host races in NASCAR's top series, the Sprint Cup. As of 2011, it remains one of the select tracks to host two Cup races in a single season. Although NASCAR is known for its full-time racers that compete for the Sprint Cup, the sport is actually open to any potential driver. Anyone licensed to drive with NASCAR can register, but only 43 drivers qualify for a race.

      Have your car ranked in the top 35 among owners points in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series on the week of the race; these drivers automatically qualify.

      Enter your car for the race by mailing in the entry blank with NASCAR. The entry fee is $3,300 and must be received 13 days before the race.

      Arrive at the Phoenix International Raceway in time for registration for the Sprint Cup Series race. Registration usually opens at 6:30 a.m. two days before the scheduled race and ends at 6 p.m. the same day.

      Bring the car to the track in time for qualifying, which is usually scheduled for a two-hour time slot in the afternoon on the day of registration. NASCAR officials will give you more specific details.

      Run up to two qualifying laps on the 1-mile tri-oval track. If your car isn't among the top 35, your best one-lap speed must be among the best eight non-automatics to get one of those last spots. If you are in the top 35, you're racing for the best starting position.
