Gear List for Bareback Riding
-
Rigging
-
The rigging is what the rider holds onto and is described by the PRCA as resembling a "suitcase handle on a strap." The rigging is usually made with a plastic and is covered in leather. The plastic provides flexibility so the rigging fits to the horse.
The rigging is attached to the horse with a cinch and a strap called a latigo. To ensure the safety of the horses, PRCA requires the latigo to be made of leather. The cinch must be made of neoprene or mohair. The center of the cinch must be at least 8 inches wide. No sharp points or objects are permitted on the cinch or latigo.
Bareback Pad
-
Bareback pads are also required to protect the horse. The PRCA requires the bareback pad to cover the area underneath as well as two inches behind the rigging.
Spurs and Gloves
-
Bareback riders must wear spurs. The PRCA requires that the spurs have rowels with at least five points, and the rowels must rotate. Tthe spurs must be dull so as not to cut or injure the horse. Cowboys wear a glove to protect the hand and to help grip the rigging.
Other Safety Equipment
-
In addition to the required equipment, cowboys may choose to wear additional protective gear. This includes equipment such as elbow and forearm pads, neck roll or support, a mouth guard and a helmet. Many cowboys wear a protective vest for the chest and back in case of a fall.
