How to Pick Discus Shoes

Discus throwers compete in track and field competitions to throw a round disc or discus the farthest distance. To establish a strong discus throwing technique, assess the rotation and spin of the discus, your body and your feet. Proper discus throwing shoes, usually either spin or glide versions, will decrease the friction between the shoe and the hard ring surface.

Instructions

    • 1

Know your level. Beginning discus throwers will have different needs than advanced discus throwers. Beginners just learning the spin technique will not benefit from spinning more quickly; they may need to use a normal sneaker while training.

    • 2

Test your balance when wearing the shoe. The spin technique focuses on balancing the weight of the body on the toes. Many discus shoes offer a rounded ball toe for easier spinning, but weight balance becomes more difficult with these shoes.

    • 3

Check the size. Retailers often offer discus shoes in male sizes only. Convert your size if you are a female thrower.

    • 4

Check the width. The length of the shoe is not the only size you should be checking. Some discus shoes are very narrow and can cause cramping in a wider foot. Check the width of the shoe to ensure it is comfortable on the foot.

Practice before buying. Before purchasing any discus shoe, ensure you practice a few spins. Go through your technique on a hard surface to ensure the feel of the spin matches the rotation of your throw.
