Bow String Tools

A bow string is the simplest component of a bow the archery enthusiast can manufacture himself. Since most bow strings consist of a single continuous loop of material, there is little complexity involved in their design. Although there are several different materials that can be used to create a bow string, the basic process of making the string follows some universal methods and requires a basic set of tools.
  1. Bow String Jig

    • A bow string jig is a wooden or metal platform used as a support base for holding bow string material as it is wound and formed into a bow string. The platform has two posts at each end, which are connected to the jig body with pivoting mounts that allow the posts to be rotated on the ends of the jig. Most bow string jigs have one set of posts fixed in lengthwise position on the jig, while the other set of posts is adjustable along a portion of the length of the jig. This allows for creating bow strings of differing lengths.

    String Server Jig

    • A string server jig holds a spool of serving string and maintains a constant string tension while the serving string is applied to the bow string. The most common design consists of a small rod or spindle to hold the spool of serving string, which is mounted to a notched guide for delivering the string from the spool. The body of the serving jig contains small holes through which the serving string is threaded and which act as holding points to maintain the tension on the serving string while it is being applied to the bow string.

    String Spreader

    • A string spreader is a straight or elongated C-shaped tool with either notches or clamps on the ends, which are used to affix the spreader to the bow string and hold it in place. The bow string spreader spreads apart the bow strings on compound bows so that the serving string can be applied to the center portion of the bow string while the string is mounted on the bow.
