How to Hit a Shuttlecock in Badminton

As the goal of badminton is to hit the shuttlecock over the net, knowing how to complete this action is important to the game. Like other games, practice is an important element in learning to hit the shuttlecock and being able to position your shot.

      Know the type of shuttlecock you'll be playing with and any other conditions that could affect the game. For example, if you're playing a recreational game outside, the wind will affect the movement of the shuttlecock and your strategies in hitting it.

      Learn the various stroke techniques. It's best to learn the correct techniques in the beginning and they'll help you know how to hit the shuttlecock in a game. Check out some online videos showing the strokes or have a coach show you.

      Focus on your footwork. A Korean national player once said, "You hit shuttle with your feet," indicating the importance of good footwork. The reason footwork is important is that if you can't get to the shuttlecock, you can't hit it.

      Keep your eye on the shuttlecock. Losing sight of the shuttlecock or taking your eye off of it as you go to hit it often results in errors or misses.

      Hit the shuttlecock high and early regardless of the stroke that you're using. Remember to complete your follow through as well so that your stroke and hit will be better. Once you've hit the shuttlecock, return to your stance of readiness.
