1
Sprint at full stride to the next base when the ball is in play. Base runners do this when a batter hits the ball or if the base runner chooses to steal a base. Base runners should prepare to slide about four steps before reaching the base.
-
2
Begin to shift your weight to your left side as you lower your body toward the ground and bend your knees slightly.
-
3
Bend your left knee and tuck your left foot underneath your right knee as you continue to lower your body into a sitting position. When done properly, your legs will form a figure "4" and the majority of your body weight should be on your left hip.
-
4
Lower yourself to the ground while continuing to propel forward and allow the force of your movement to lean you back so you are nearly laying down flat. The purpose of sliding is to minimize your body's surface area so that you can reach the bag safely underneath the tag of a defensive player.

5
Raise your extended right leg slightly as you approach the bag to avoid slamming your foot into the base, which is attached to the ground. Youth leagues are continuing to implement breakaway bases that detach from the ground after significant impact to reduce this injury risk. Your right foot should make contact with the bag. Make sure to not lose contact as you begin to stand.
