Aluminum Bat Length Guide
-
Youth
-
Youth bats are much shorter than high school and college level bats. Determining length for a youth bat is also the most difficult because you must account for growth. Bats ranging from 24 to 27 inches are standard for tee-ball and kids in the 5- to 8-year range. Little league kids move into a 28- to 31-inch range with 29 to 30 inches being an acceptable size for most players. The 29- to 30-inch bat allows room for growth among smaller players and fits comfortably in the hands of larger players. It is the most manageable length but 30 to 32 inches is desired by players taller than 5 feet, and smaller bats may be used for smaller and lighter players.
High School
-
Bat length in high school is similar to college, but there remains a need for shorter lengths to accommodate small players. Bats ranging from 30 to 34 inches cover the majority of high school players with the occasional 28- to 29-inch bat being necessary. The 30-inch bat is ideal for players between 5 feet and 5 feet 6 inches tall. The 31- to 32-inch bat is comfortable up to 6 feet, and taller players will use a 33- to 34-inch bat.
College
-
The bat weight typically increases from high school to college, but length remains similar. College baseball players spend more time strength training, and the extra muscle increases bat speed and power. The college player may increase bat length by 1 inch because the extra length increases leverage and moves the bat head over the plate at a desirable rate. Overall the college player does not make any major changes in bat length unless a growth spurt is experienced.
Preference
-
Preference is the final factor used to determine bat length and weight. Every player has a preferred bat size that is comfortable in his hands. The most comfortable bat inspires the greatest amount of confidence and success at the plate. The best method of determining the ideal length and weight is practicing with a variety of bats. Numerous bats are available in the typical dugout, and experimenting will ultimately lead to the final conclusion on ideal bat length.
