How to Give Sneakers a Better Grip

Sneakers come in many shapes and sizes but most have a common feature -- treads on the soles. These treads are designed to help players get a grip when running, stopping and pivoting. Over time, however, the treads may become worn, and the grip may not be as strong. Another common problem is that the soles of the shoes collect film and dust, causing players to slip when they should be able to stop. Luckily, there are several ways to enhance the grip on sneakers.

Clean the soles of your shoes on a regular basis. Ideally, you'll do this after each time you use them. One major factor in sneakers losing their grip is the collection of dust and film on the soles. By cleaning the soles regularly, you'll keep this film away and your treads gripping.

Sweep the floor. Cleaning dirt and liquids off the floor will allow your shoes' soles to do as they were meant to do: grip the ground tightly.

    • 3

Wet your soles occasionally to give them better grip on hard surfaces. This is based on the same principle as sticking a suction cup to glass. By wetting the soles, you create a vacuum between the water and the surface, thus creating a stronger grip.

Spray a generous amount of traction fluid onto a towel, and then wipe the bottom of your shoes with it. The traction fluid will not only remove dirt and dust but will also leave a sticky resin behind, increasing the shoe's grip. Reapply the spray when you begin to feel your grip getting looser.

Step on a sticky mat before you step onto the court. Sticky mats are thin rubber mats with a sticky film that is designed to remove the dust and dirt on the bottom of your shoe. These make your grip seem brand new again.
