1
Measure out the backboard. Use the measuring tape to measure 6 feet-by-3 1/2 feet and mark these down on the plywood with the pencil. Use the ruler to mark out the rectangle. Cut the backboard out with the hacksaw.
-
2
Paint the backboard. If you would like a regulation board, paint it white. If you would like a unique board of your own design, paint it any way you wish.
-
3
Paint a shooter's square roughly in the center of the backboard. The "square" is a 2 feet-by-1 1/2 feet rectangle that should be 3 feet from the bottom and both sides and 1 feet 9 inches from the top. Paint a 2-inch border around the shooters square.
-
4
Cut two squares of steel, each 6 inches wide and 6 inches long from the sheet steel with a hacksaw. Weld the two squares together to form a metal "L" shape. Set the "L" shape on a working surface so that one side is on the surface and the other sticks up at a 90-degree angle.
-
5
Lay the metal hoop on the edge that is flat against your work surface so that it touches both corners. Draw a semicircle around the hoop that touches both corners. Cut out the semicircle and weld the "L" shape to the metal hoop.
-
6
Weld the 12 steel hooks onto the rim of the metal hoop and attach the net to the hoop. Space the hooks evenly around the hoop. Drill holes through the back of the metal "L" shape. Drill at least 4 holes near the corners of the square. Secure the hoop to the backboard with the wood screws.
