1
Cut an 18-inch by 18-inch square of plywood to use as a backboard.
-
2
Cut a wire hanger with a pair of wire cutters. Snip through the wire on both sides of the twisted section below the hook of the hanger, leaving only the section that normally would go inside a shirt.
-
3
Wrap the wire around the perimeter of a coffee can, or similar-sized round object in the size of your desired rim.
-
4
Twist the two ends of the rim around each other multiple times to secure the ring shape and create a neck for the rim.
-
5
Drill a pair of holes through the plywood. They should be 1 inch from one of the sides, centered across the width and a half-inch apart.
-
6
Pass one end of the wire through each hole, then bend the wire ends flat against the back of the plywood, in opposing directions.
-
7
Secure the wire ends to the back of the plywood with a staple gun.
-
8
Cut two sections of PVC pipe that are each approximately 3 inches long.
-
9
Wrap the end of a vinyl strap around one of the pipes, creating a loop, and sew the loop together so it is securely around the pipe.
-
10
Repeat for the second vinyl strap.
-
11
Cut the straps to 14 inches longer than you want the top of the backboard to hang relative to the top of the door. For example, to hang 6 inches below the door frame, cut the straps 20 inches below the pipe loops.
-
12
Secure the straps to the back of the plywood with a staple gun. Put the two straps on opposite sides of the plywood, 2 inches from the sides of the backboard. The bottoms of the straps should be 12 inches below the top of the backboard.
-
13
Drape the straps over an open door, with the backboard on the side you want to play on. Close the door and pull down on the hoop until you meet resistance. The PVC pipes prevent the straps from pulling through the door, and the 12 feet of strap behind the backboard and approximately 2 inches on top of the door make your backboard hang at your desired height.
