1
Secure the bicycle frame in a work stand or prop it up securely on the ground. If you are not using a work stand, place a protective mat or rug under the frame to avoid scraping the head tube against the ground. Apply bearing grease to the top and bottom of the inner head tube, and to the underside of each headset cup.
-
2
Prop the bottom of head tube against a wooden board. 2-inch by 4-inch boards work well for this, as they are thick enough to provide shock absorption. Press the upper headset cup into the top of the head tube by hand. You will likely not be able to press the cup in further than 1 mm by hand. However, this ensures the cup is being pressed flush into the head tube.
-
3
Place a second wooden board atop the upper headset cup. Use a rubber mallet or large hammer to gently tap the board directly above the center of the headset cup. Continue tapping the board until the headset cup is pressed fully into the head tube. The cup will sit perfectly centered and flush with the head tube when it is correctly installed.
-
4
Turn the frame over and repeat the cup installation procedure for the lower headset cup. Inspect the cups carefully to ensure they both sit flush with the head tube. Apply bearing grease to the inside of each headset cup.
-
5
Place the lower bearings into the headset cup. If your threadless headset is not assembled as a complete unit, place the bearing seal atop the bearings. Place the crown race onto the fork steerer tube, then slide the steerer tube into the frame head tube. Turn the frame upright while applying upward pressure to the fork so that the lower bearing assembly is held in place.
-
6
Place the upper bearings around the fork steerer tube and into the upper headset cup. Place the upper bearing seal and cap atop the bearings. If desired, place spacers atop the bearing cup to increase handlebar height. Finally, slide the stem assembly onto the fork steerer tube.
-
7
Thread the cap bolt into the steerer tube. Use an Allen wrench to tighten the bolt, thus securing the fork and headset assembly. Ensure that the assembly is tight by firmly pressing forward on the stem to check for play in the steerer tube. Continue tightening the cap bolt until the head tube assembly exhibits no play. Ensure that the fork and stem are perfectly aligned with each other, then use an Allen wrench to tighten the stem clamp bolts. This clamps the stem to the steerer tube, thus securing your threadless headset assembly.
