How to Repair Carbon Frames
Things You'll Need
- 80 grit sandpaper
- Bonding agent
- Fiberglass
- Scissors
- Epoxy resin
- Heat shrink wrap tape
- Needle
- Heat gun or hair dryer
Instructions
-
-
1
Remove any carbon shards from the damaged area by hand.
-
2
Sand around the damaged area to remove paint from the frame. This will allow the patch to overlap directly with the carbon fibers on the frame.
-
3
Fill the damaged area with a filler, such as Bondo or other bonding agent. Smooth the filler so that it is even with the rest of the frame.
-
4
Cut fiberglass patches to cover the damaged area. The more serious the damage is to the frame, the more patches need to cover the area. Cut each successive patch smaller than the previous patch to taper the ends of the patch material.
-
5
Apply the first patch over the damaged area and cover with epoxy resin.
-
6
Wrap the patch with heat activated shrink wrap tape. This will compress the patch and help it bond to the frame.
-
7
Poke small holes into the wrap with a needle over the patch. These holes allow excess resin to come through the tape.
-
8
Heat the shrink wrap tape with a heat gun or hair dryer to compress the patch further. Allow the resin to cure following the manufacturer's directions.
-
9
Remove the shrink wrap from the patch.
