How to Repair Steel Bicycle Frame Damage

While steel bicycle frames are some of the heaviest and strongest on the market, even they can sometimes be damaged. If your bike sustains substantial damage that may compromise its structural integrity -- and hence your safety -- it's usually best to take it to an experienced bike mechanic to have the frame welded or brazed. However, if your steel frame is merely chipped or dented, a quick fix-up is easy to carry out at home.

  • Acetone or turpentine cleaner
  • Rags and sponges
  • Sandpaper
  • Epoxy or auto body filler
  • Putty knife
  • Masking tape
  • Spray paint

      Clean the bike frame thoroughly, using an acetone or turpentine cleaner to remove any oil or grease.

      Sand the damaged area vigorously until you get down to the steel base, then it wipe down to remove any residue.

      Use epoxy or auto body filler to fill in chips or dents. Dab the substance on with a putty knife, smoothing the edges so that the new surface matches the original shape of the frame.

      Sand the area again after the epoxy or body filler has hardened, smoothing down lumps and rough edges.

      Prepare to repaint the damaged area by using masking tape to cover parts of the frame you do not wish to paint.

      Apply a layer of primer, using sweeping strokes to create a smooth finish. Allow to dry.

      Apply a new layer of paint, using sweeping strokes to create a smooth finish. Allow to dry, and touch up with additional coats if needed.
