How to Add a Bike Rack to a Cargo Hitch Platform

A hitch-mounted bicycle rack is one of the easiest types of rack to install and use, providing of course the vehicle has a tow hitch. Tow hitch racks are metal-barred racks that extend out behind the vehicle and haul bicycles in secured cradles supported by the metal bars. Versions are available that carry up to six bicycles at a time. You need the size of the tow hitch for your vehicle to get the suitable rack size for the hitch.

Instructions

Measure the tow hitch on the back underside of the vehicle. These are square tubes. Measure the distance between two opposing sides for the hitch six. Common sizes are 1 1/4 inches and 2 inches. Check the rack hitch mount is the proper size for the hitch. Racks are sized by the tow hitch receiver you just measured.

Remove the lock-pin from the rack and set it aside. The lock-pin is found at the hitch arm and is near the end of the rack arm. Slide the rack arm into the vehicle's tow receiver. Align the holes on the rack to the holes on the receiver and slide the lock-pin through the four holes.

Push the lock-pin device through the lock-pin to secure it in position, ensuring the rack will not slip out of the receiver.

Load the bicycles so the handlebars are opposing each other with each successive bike added to the rack.
