Installation Instructions for a Bell Bike Rack

A bicycle rack allows you to haul gear or hang panniers -- bike "backpacks" -- from the rack. Bell produces a series of racks that attach to the seat stem. These racks have bungee cords to lash equipment to the rack and keep it in place as well as the ability to hang other bags or goods. The installation of the Bell rack takes a few spare minutes of time.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a line around the seat stem where it connects to the bicycle frame. Use this mark to know where to replace the seat stem to your height during the installation.

    • 2

Set the bicycle against a wall or bike rack and remove the seat stem from the bicycle frame. Some bicycles have a quick release lever that allows fast seat stem removal, and others use an Allen screw and nut. Use the Allen wrench to loosen the nut if your bicycle has the screw. Do not remove the nut, just loosen until the seat stem pulls up and off the bicycle. Or, turn the quick release lever counterclockwise until the seat stem is loose enough to pull up and out from the bicycle.

    • 3

Slide the Bell bike rack bracket around the seat stem so the deck of the rack faces up and extends out from beneath the bicycle seat.

    • 4

Push the seat stem with the rack bracket around it back into the bicycle frame. Push the seat stem down to the marked line and tighten the seat stem nut or quick release lever to secure the seat stem back in place.

    • 5

Keep the rack extending back and over the rear tire. Tighten the two side set screws on the rack bracket with the Allen wrench. Tighten as tight as possible and push the sides of the rack to ensure no movement is taking place.
