Choose the proper ball. The type of ball you pick makes a huge difference in your overall performance. Choose a ball that's neither too light nor too heavy to comfortably carry with one hand.

Get into position. Holding the ball out and down, step towards the lane. As you get closer to the lane, swing the ball down to your side, while extending your off hand (the left hand for right-handed people) out to the side for balance. On your third step, bring the ball back to waist height.

As you reach the line, let go of the ball in a swift, smooth motion, aiming toward the center of the lane.

Follow through. Once you have released the ball, continue to swing your arm until you're pointing at the pins at the end of the lane. Stay upright and balanced, with your hands cupped.

Pick up any spares. If you don't get a strike, you'll get another chance to knock the rest of the pins down. Adjust your aim to get the most pins at one time.
