How to Wear Boxing Wraps

Boxing wraps, or hand wraps, are essential for anyone wishing to box. The wrap goes around your hand, offering protection to the plethora of ligaments and tiny bones in your hand. There are many ways to put on a boxing wrap, and most trainers have their own preferred method. The key thing is that your hand feels comfortable, protected and that the wrap is not so tight it cuts off blood circulation to your fingers.

      Hold the hand you are wrapping, palm-up, and spread your fingers as wide as they will go. Hook the looped end of the boxing wrap around your thumb.

      Bring the material down behind your wrist. Wrap it around your wrist three times then bring the material diagonally along the back of your hand and through the gap between your thumb and forefinger. Wrap the material three times around your knuckles.

      Flip your hand so that your palm is now facing down. Bring the material diagonally across the back of your hand, around your wrist 1 1/2 times and then diagonally back again and between the thumb and forefinger once more. Turn your hand back again so that your palm is facing up.

      Bring the material diagonally back down across your palm, loop it around the wrist 1 1/2 times so that you finish with the material coming up the same side of your wrist as your thumb. Without crossing your palm, bring the material through the gap between you thumb and forefinger.

      Flip your hand again so that the palm is facing down. Bring the material diagonally down across the back of your hand and around your wrist, once. Turn your hand palm-up again and wrap the material around your knuckles, once.

      Finish the hand wrapping by creating figures-of-8. Bring the material diagonally down across the back of your hand, around your wrist, diagonally up across your palm and through the gap between your thumb and forefinger. Keep repeating this until you are almost out of material.

      Wrap the material round your wrist a couple of times. Press the Velcro end against the material to seal your boxing wrap in place.
