How to Wear Wrist Wraps for Boxing

One of the problems frequently encountered by boxers is that their punches generate so much force that when they strike a big bone in the opponent, such as the skull or elbow, it cracks a bone in the hand or sprains the wrist. Wrist wraps (more often called "hand wraps") are meant to lock the many small bones and strands of connective tissue together into a solid unit.

Instructions

    • 1

Put your thumb through the loop that is on one end of the wrap. Many wraps have the words "This Side Down" or something similar printed on them. Make sure that this printing is facing down and out.

    • 2

Wrap up the wrist three times, finishing the final motion so the wrap is underneath the wrist.

    • 3

Bring the wrap up around the wrist and over the top of the hand on a diagonal line to the knuckle of your pinkie finger.

    • 4

Pull the wrapping down under the pinkie and across the ball of the hand, coming up on the other side at the index finger. Then wrap across the knuckles and back to the pinkie knuckle.

    • 5

Draw the wrap under the hand to the base of the thumb, then up and over on a diagonal across the hand and into the space between the pinkie and the third finger. Bring the wrap down under the hand, back to the base of the thumb and then up and over again, but this time to the space between the third finger and the middle finger. Repeat one more time for the space between the middle finger and the index finger.

    • 6

Bring the wrap around the side of the index finger after the last wrapping from step 5 so that you can wrap across the knuckles again. Take the wrap under the hand and back towards the wrist.

    • 7

Tie off the wrap by wrapping it around the wrist for the remainder of its length, and then fasten it using the Velcro strap.
