What Is Hand Wrap Size for Amateur Boxing?

Boxing gloves are designed to pad the blow when a boxer is punched. But there is still a risk to the hands of the boxer doing the punching, so he must wrap his hands before he straps on the gloves. The International Boxing Association (AIBA) and USA Boxing maintain specific rules regarding the type and amount of hand-wrapping a fighter can use in competition.
  1. Bandage Size

    • The USA Boxing Rulebook states that bandages used as hand wraps must measure 15 yards long by 2 inches wide for each hand.

    Gauze Hand Wraps

    • Gauze used for hand wraps must be made from cotton or labeled as "soft surgical" gauze.

    Velpeau Hand Wraps

    • The AIBA and USA Boxing allow boxers to use cloth Velpeau bandages as hand wraps. Velpeau hand wraps must measure at least 3 feet long and 2 inches wide.

    Adhesive

    • Hand wraps are secured by a strip of adhesive tape that measures 1 inch wide and a maximum of 6 feet long.

    Provision

    • AIBA rules state that in international competition such as the Olympics and the Continental Championships, the federation hosting the event is responsible for providing new regulation-size hand-wrapping bandages to all boxers competing in the tournament.
