How to Change a Cricket Bat Grip Using a Grip Cone

A cricket bat's rubber grip needs changing often. Batsmen use a grip cone, a simple conical piece of wood a few inches longer than the bat handle. The top is narrower than the bat handle and the end is a metal cup, which fits over the handle. Grip cones are inexpensive, and if ordered online will probably cost more in postage than for the item itself. Grips come in a variety of thicknesses but all respond to the roll-up, roll-on, roll-back process.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the old grip by rolling it back up the handle. Dust the bare handle with talcum powder.

    • 2

Place the new grip on the cone as far as it will go down without forcing it. Its outside surface should be showing. Roll up the grip, starting from the bottom, until it is completely rolled and looking like a doughnut. It will now be inside-out.

    • 3

Take the grip off the cone, turn it upside-down and put it back on the cone's top. Roll it to the bottom of the cone.

    • 4

Place the cone over the handle and roll the grip over the cup (at the bottom of the cone) and down the handle. Roll the grip, still doughnut-shaped, to the bottom of the handle before unrolling it back up. You will need to have the bottom of the grip flush with the bat's shoulder. If you do not achieve this the first time, roll the grip back up the handle, adjust and roll it down again. Some rubber will still hang over the top of the handle.

Hold the bat firmly and tape the grip down around the shoulder of the bat. Cut off extra rubber at the top
