How to Repaint Football Helmets

Football helmets are worn at all times during a game to protect players from head injuries. Because of the violent collisions common in the game, these helmets often become very scratched and scraped up. With the high cost of a modern helmet, refinishing the paint is the best option to keep helmets looking good throughout the season. Prepare the outside of the helmet by removing old decals or logos and the facemask.

Lightly sand the outer surface of the helmet to dull any shine and give it a suitable base for the new paint to adhere to. Inspect the surface to make sure it has been sanded sufficiently before proceeding.

    • 2

Mix 1 gallon of clean water with 1/2 cup of distilled vinegar. Dip a clean cloth into this cleaning mixture and wipe off all dust and dirt from the outside of the helmet. Allow the helmet to dry completely.

    • 3

Place the helmet on the drop cloth and thoroughly shake the spray can of paint according to the manufacturer's instructions. Apply the first coat of paint from a distance of 8 to 12 inches away from the helmet. Move the can with your arm slowly, back and forth, up and down to ensure an even coat of paint. Allow the helmet to dry completely, about two hours.

Lightly sand and clean the helmet again. Allow the helmet to dry before applying additional coats of paint as needed.
