Football Training Drills

Football has many different positions that require many similar skills and training. Strength and agility can not be taught, but they can be achieved. There are key drills that can improve these skills and help a person on the road to becoming a great football player.
  1. Stretching

    • Stretching is extremely important in football because there is a lot of squatting, running and quick movements. Making sure to stretch before every practice will help ensure that you do not unnecessarily hurt yourself. Touch your toes from standing straight up and then side to side also. Stretch as far as you can without hurting yourself. This will help your hamstrings and your shoulders as well. Doing squats as part of your warm-up also will help you. Slowly squat down and hold the position for a few seconds, then stand up and do it again.

    Ladders

    • Use a ladder which is placed flat on the ground, or strings that are tied together to resemble a ladder. These drills will help you with quickness. Start on one side of the ladder then quickly put your left foot in, then your right, then put your left foot out followed by your right. Quickly repeat this in each block all the way up the ladder. This is called the 1-2 step. You can use these ladders and different variations of the 1-2 step to create many different drills.

    Agility

    • Some drills are meant to help increase agility and quickness. Weaving in and out of objects will help with that. Set up about five long objects that are about a foot tall. Weave in and out of them head on. Then weave through them alternating running forwards and backwards. Do this multiple times. Running quick figure eights around cones as quickly as possible. Set up small hurdles close to each other and run over them. Staying on your toes will help you with all of these drills.
