Football Training Drills – The Gauntlet
This is one of the football training drills we have started using;we call it the gauntlet. It may not be original but it is a great one to incorporate into your practices.
The Gauntlet
You line up half the team shoulder to shoulder.
The other half lines up across from them (about 5 yards across form the other group lined up shoulder to shoulder). They line up shoulder to shoulder facing each other.
One line is the ball carrying line the other is the tackling line.
On the whistle the north end of the line (1st person in line) runs around the outside of the line entering the middle of the two groups.
The south end of the line (1st person) runs around the outside and enters into the middle of the other groups and attempts to tackle the ball carrier coming his way.
Once the tackle is made, kids get up and go to the opposite lines to they get to now be the tackler of the ball runner.
This gets the kids really excited plus it teaches good tackling, staying low when running the ball and tackling.
It gives the kids confidence to make a play one on one. Since there is not far for either of the players to run away contact is inevitable.
