Football Development Drills – Passing Drills

We work on passing skills as often as we can.   These drills help younger players with ball control and more seasoned players can hone their skills.     The first drill works on long and short passing and the Passing game helps you to assess abilities and quickness.

Short and Long Passing Drill
This drill works on communication and ball control.
Need a ball and partner to stand across from each other.
1st person will pass ball short and partner will need to run up and pass ball back but take it long or deep.

Partner will then need to pass back communicating whether it is short or deep for partner.   Passes should alternate short and long and players should get a workout as well as working on control, forward back footwork and communicating.   (Players will follow their pass)

You can challenge by saying no hands at first (to get footwork moving) and then to only hands for deep balls.

Passing Game
I make a passing game for this drill and see who can catch the most or who is quickest.

Set out three cones and have about 3-5 balls ready to go. One at a time, I have one of the players run a hook pattern to the first cone from the line of scrimmage where they will receive a pass.

They immediately run forward to the middle cone for the next pass (regardless if they catch it or not, they continue to run to all the cones) for a second pass.

Then they back peddle to the third cone for the last pass for a little bit of D.B. work.
