Football Development Drills – O-Line D-Line Competition Drill

Football Development Drills – O-Line D-Line Competition DrillI have a competition drill I use with my O-Line and D-Line. It works pass blocking and rushing the passer. The players are really into the competition, and it shows in our unit sessions of practice and on gameday.

O-Line D-Line Competition Drill
Players form a single file line.
1st player comes out and is the pass blocker protecting the QB and the coach is 5 yards behind him. The next player in line is the pass rusher.

On a count or whistle, the play begins and coach counts to 5.
If the rusher can wrap the coach before a five count, he wins.
If the pass blocker prevents him for 5 seconds, then the pass blocker wins.

The loser is out and must sit out until time to start over (while players are out, if you have a second coach that can be working with the eliminated players on a pass blocking drill, telling the kids that are training for the next round).

If blocker wins, he rotates to end of line.
If rusher wins he rotates to blocker.
Next person in line becomes the next rusher.
Go until there are only 2 players left.

At this point, the winner must win as both pass rusher and blocker. The first one to succeed is the winner.

Keep in mind, if the pass blocker holds or either player commits a foul, that player automatically loses. The kids really enjoy and look forward to this.
