Football Tackling Drills – Dive Roll Tackle Drill and Bean Bag Drill
Looking to improve your players skills with some fresh new drills? Here are two drills to add to your list that your players will love and hone their skills for tackling and as well as at the line of scrimmage.
Dive Roll Tackle
This drill can be used for all age levels.
Position: Defensive Line
Lineman will be in down position and across the ball another player holds tackle dummy one position over to the right or left.
On the the movement of the ball (not count) d-lineman takes one step toward the dummy at the same time O-player pulls it farthur away to right or left. D-lineman dives at dummy and rolls on to ground with dummy simulating a running back running away from defender. Make sure the player holding the dummy stands on the outside of which side they go and release the dummy upon d-lineman wrapping their arms.
Bean Bag Drill
This drill teaches our linemen how to stay low and explode off the line of scrimmage.
1) 2 lines approx 4 yards apart
2) Place a bean bag 3 yards in front of each line and 1 tackle dummy 6-8 yards in front of the lines (in the center of the 2 lines)
3) From the 3 point stance, blow the whistle.
Each player explodes from his stance and races to pick up his bean bag and proceeds to the tackle dummy. The first player to the dummy makes initial contact and the second player to the dummy cleans up.
The dummy should be held by a coach who provide some resistance in order to teach gang tackling and ball stripping.
