How to Throw a Turn Over Shot

Turnover shots are essential to the game of disc golf. Disc golfers utilize a Frisbee-shaped device to throw and reach their target. A turnover shot is intended for the disc to flip backwards and flank to the right instead of the left. Alternatively, turnover shots can be thrown to favor the left side of the course when it looks as if it may head right. This shot is also known as a backhanded shot due to its back-spinning nature. Practice with family and friends to master your technique.

Hold the disc with an overhand grip. Curve your hand around the outer rim of the disc, the rim farthest away from your body and wrap your fingers underneath the rim to secure a good grip. Keep fingers firm and flexible, but not too rigid.

Stand up straight and keep your head facing forward. Breathe naturally. Pull the disc in to your torso. Lunge forward with the foot favoring the side of your body holding the disc. If you're holding the disc in your right hand, lunge with the right foot. Bend your lunging leg and move your torso forward in one fluid motion.

Extend your arm outward and release the disc on your lunge. Angle the disc diagonally at a slight upward angle. Throw the disc off speed, either slower or faster than you normally would to toss the disc straight. The flexible grip, upward angle and off-speed motion allows the disc to catch air underneath the outer rim of the disc and flank it off course. Every disc has a different weight. Talk with a golf disc provider about properly weighted discs to suit your strength and body type so that you can throw off speed and complete your turnover shots.
