How to Keep Golf Scores for a Beginner

Golf is an individual sport enjoyed by players of all ages. After learning how to play the game, new golfers must start focusing on some of the rules of golf. One of the first things a beginner must learn on the course is how to properly keep his score. This task is relatively simple, but can become difficult when having to factor in penalties for hitting out of bounds and into hazards. Recording your scores on the golf course is a great way to measure improvement.

Instructions

    • 1
You can find a golf scorecard and pencil in the clubhouse or at the first tee.

Pick up a course scorecard and a pencil in the clubhouse before you tee off.

    • 2

After each hole, count the number of strokes it took to get the ball in the hole. A stroke is any swing where the intention is to hit the ball, even if the ball is missed. Practice swings do not count as strokes.

    • 3

After nine holes, sum the number of strokes on each hole and write the total in the appropriate box on the scorecard. Proceed to the back nine if you are playing 18 holes.

    • 4

After 18 holes, sum the number of strokes from the back nine and write the total in the appropriate box. Add together your scores from the front nine and back nine to produce your 18-hole score.

    • 5

Retain the scorecard with your final score on it.

    • 6

Record your score electronically on a spreadsheet or manually in a notebook specifically for golf scores.
