How to Establish a Golf League for Women

With widespread media coverage of both professional and amateur players, the popularity of golf has carried to all corners of the globe. Thousands of women are learning the game and looking for someplace to play as well as companions to join them. Many public golf courses host women's golf leagues, with nine-hole formats being the most popular. A little research may show you just how many women would love to meet each week to enjoy the outdoors, and from there it's a few easy steps to forming a league.

Instructions

    • 1

Investigate other women's golf leagues to see how they are run. Call local golf courses to find out which host leagues and, more importantly, which are willing to host your women's league. Visit websites of women's golf leagues in your area and elsewhere.

    • 2

Find other women interested in starting or joining a league. Websites such as Play Golf America provide a ZIP code search engine to help you find other women golfers. Post a notice at local golf courses that you are looking to start a women's league.

    • 3

Survey the players you've gathered to determine the best day and time for your league. Your summer league may be able to accommodate more players if tee times are after normal working hours. For winter leagues, an early block of starting times may work best.

    • 4

Decide on a format for your league. Most golf leagues are based on nine holes of play. Options include forming a pool to pay out prize money each week or each month, and having different team matchups each week.

    • 5

Start a website or bulletin for your league and encourage members to submit editorial contributions. Report on holes-in-one or other remarkable feats such as eagles. List the winners each week and who shot the best personal scores.

    • 6

Host a year-end gathering for the entire league. If the golf course complex includes a restaurant or bar, hold the festivities there as a way to thank the facility management for its cooperation.
