How to Increase Your Hand Speed in a Down Swing

A common misconception in golf is that increasing the speed of your downswing will translate into the ball traveling a farther distance. However, the speed of a swing doesn't matter quite as much as the angle of the club face at impact. The easiest way to increase distance in your golf swing is to form a sharp angle at your wrists early in your backswing and maintain it all the way through impact. Once your arms have become comfortable making this motion and can do it consistently, only then should you consider a drill that will help increase swing speed.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut inch-long lengths of lead tape and apply them to the sole of your golf club. You can decide how many is appropriate but you will most likely only need three of four.

    • 2
      Take the club back halfway.

Address the ball as you would for a normal golf swing, take the club back halfway so your wrists can cock at a 90-degree angle and swing down towards the ball, striking it firmly and only following through halfway.

    • 3

Lengthen your back swing and follow-thourgh until you are taking a nice full swing. Never go past parallel in your backswing or it will become increasingly difficult to maintain the sharp angle at your wrists and you will lose force.

Become comfortable making a full swing with your weighted clubs then remove the tape and swing naturally.
