How to Wear a Goalie Chest Protector

Hockey can be dangerous for goalies who are not adequately protected. You are vulnerable to other players slamming in you, and you must stop the puck with your body if you can't do it with your glove, stick or skates. A chest protector is key piece of safety equipment that helps protect a goalie's stomach, chest, arms, elbows and shoulders during a hockey game. To maximize the protection that a chest protector provides, you must wear it properly.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a chest protector that is the right size for your body type. The size chest protector you buy will not necessarily coincide with your size shirt. Use a sizing chart, available online or at sporting goods stores, or have a professional outfitter measure you.

    • 2

Lift the chest protector up and over your head. Keep your eye on the armholes and slip them through as you bring the chest protector down.

    • 3

Adjust the chest protector so that your elbows are resting in the protective elbow cups and so that your bicep and forearm are snug in the built-in protectors.

    • 4

Tighten all of the straps so that the chest protector doesn't come loose during play.

    • 5

Slip your hockey jersey on over the chest protector when you have finished putting on the protector.

    • 6

Wear your chest protector over the outside of your hockey pants or tuck them in. This is a personal preference. You may want to try it one way a few days, then the other way to see which you like best.
