How to Become a Hockey Scorekeeper

You might not be able to play the game of ice hockey but that doesn't mean that you don't want to get involved. You can become a scorekeeper, or game supervisor, and be an integral part of the hockey game. Acting as an official ice hockey scorekeeper isn't as hard as you might think.

      Learn the game. You must know the rules of ice hockey in order to be an official scorekeeper.

      Contact local hockey teams and organizations in your area to inquire about becoming the scorekeeper for their games. If nothing is available for the upcoming season, have them put your name on a list for future openings.

      Get official training. By attending a USA Hockey Officiating Seminar you can learn everything you need to know about being a scorekeeper and the game itself. Seminars are held all over the country.

      Write, call or email USA Hockey or your local hockey federation, branch or league to express your interest in becoming a scorekeeper. Contacting these types of organizations will help get your name out there.

      Sign up for training courses to receive the certification. Not only will you learn the game and other things that you need to know, you will also meet officials from a variety of professional, university and other leagues. The tips you can learn from these officials could be invaluable.
