How to Breeze a Horse

Horses are magnificent and powerful creatures. A person can trace the racing history of horses back thousands of years. Despite this long history and their powerful physical stature, racing horses are delicate creatures that require care in handling. One such example of this care is breezing. Breezing is to run a horse easily and carefully under a hold, usually in the morning.

Instructions

    • 1

Establish a breezing time at the racing track. The earlier the breezing time the better, that way if there is problem with horse, a remedy or back-up plan can be initiated as soon as possible.

    • 2

Conduct a visual inspection of the horse prior to the breeze. Look at the way the horse is striding and make note of any change in gait. Also, inspect the horse for any physical imperfections.

    • 3

Start the breeze at a leisurely trot. Pay attention for any changes to the racehorse's demeanor or stride.

    • 4

Increase the speed of the breeze workout gradually. Wait until the horse is racing at about one-half to three quarter speed and then let off on the horse. Trainers often have their own limit for a breeze workout depending on the particular horse.

    • 5

Decrease the speed gradually until the horse is back to a comfortable trotting motion. Take note of any abnormal reaction by the horse.
