How to Choose a Hockey Stick Flex

In the game of ice hockey, choosing a stick with an appropriate stiffness is essential in order to maximize the power of your shot. Sticks are manufactured with different amounts of "flex," so some sticks are easier to bend than others. By matching an appropriate flex with the proper length of a stick, you can improve the power and accuracy of your shot on the ice.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the height of your body from the bottom of your feet to your nose. Hockey sticks typically come in standard lengths, so you will likely have to cut your stick to customize the length of the shaft of the stick.

    • 2

Visit your local sporting goods store to find sticks. The larger the selection the better, as different manufacturers offer different types of sticks that have a unique flex feeling.

    • 3

Hold the top of the shaft of the hockey stick in your dominant hand and place your other hand near the middle of the stick. Place the stick on the ground and push down as if you were shooting a puck.

    • 4

Find the stick that offers resistance, yet still allows you to flex the stick easily. The stiffer the stick, the more power you will have behind your shot.

    • 5

Review a flex table (see References) if you are unsure which stick to start with. While the appropriate flex varies among players, it will give you an appropriate idea of where to start.
