How to Do Crossovers on Quad Skates

Performing crossovers on quad roller skates employs the same technique as executing this style of turn with inline roller skates. On four-wheeled quad skates, however, crossovers are typically easier than on inline skates because the position of the wheels means you're less likely to have a foot slide out. Crossovers are useful to know, regardless of whether you're skating for fun or as part of a roller derby team. This style of turning allows you to change directions without slowing down significantly and also helps you turn within a small turning radius.

Skate in a straight line quickly enough that you can coast and still have enough speed to turn a corner. You don't need to be traveling as quickly as you can, but you can't be moving slowly, either.

    • 2

Lift the skate on the leg to the side you wish to turn and place it slightly on the other side of your other skate. For example, if you wish to turn left, lift your left skate and set it down on the right side of your right skate.

    • 3

Pump with your back foot once, and then lift that foot and place it across the other foot. In the example of turning left, push with your right foot, lift the right foot across the front of the left foot and set the right foot down on the left side of the left foot.

Repeat the process of crossing one foot over the other, and then crossing the other over the first foot. As you cross your feet, lean with your hips in the direction you wish to turn and bend slightly at the knees. The more you bend, the more secure you will feel as you execute the crossover. When you are pointing in your intended direction of travel, resume regular skating strides.
