How to Start a Lacrosse League

Lacrosse is a sport that has existed for centuries, but has only recently gained significant popularity. Though it's predominately played on the east coast of the United States, new leagues are continually forming in numerous places. If there aren't any leagues in your location, starting your own lacrosse league can be an effective solution. In order to do this, it's important to follow five main guidelines to get the league up and running.

Find players to join your lacrosse league. If you play lacrosse with friends, they are probably the first people you should approach. Otherwise, use classified ads, online ads and social networking to find people who are interested. Place fliers around your town. In general, men's leagues require 10 players on each team, and women's leagues require 12 players. You will need at the very least 20 athletes initially.

Acquire all of the necessary equipment. This is also a necessity for playing the game and keeping everyone safe. Basic equipment includes two goals, helmets or goggles, gloves, sticks, balls, jerseys and mouth-guards. In order to cover these costs, you can either ask for upfront payment from each player or require each player to provide his own equipment. If you collect money to buy the gear yourself, then you can sometimes find deals from local sports shops or online.

Find lacrosse coaches to lead the teams. At first, you are likely to only need two coaches for each team. You can acquire coaches the same way you acquire players. As your league grows over time, you can add more teams and coaches to your league.

Find a location for your practice sessions and games. Some of the best places for this are soccer and football fields. Usually the best way to find a location is to contact local schools and parks. Tell them that you want to start a lacrosse league and ask if you can have access to the field at certain designated times.

Create a schedule and start having lacrosse games. In general, it's best to have games on Friday evenings and the weekends. Make sure to check with the school or park whose field you are using to make sure that your games don't conflict with other events.
