Dart Throwing Techniques
-
Stance
-
The basis of all good techniques stems from a good stance. Rest your body weight on your forward foot. Your stance must be rock-solid, as jumping forward when throwing can lead the dart off-course. Leaning forward on your front foot maintains balance and brings you that vital few inches closer to the dartboard.
Movement
-
Only your throwing arm should move when throwing the dart. Your shoulder and the rest of your body should stay completely still to ensure stability. Also attempt to minimize any side-to-side motion on the pull back; a smooth draw back allows you to focus solely on the target prior to release.
Grip
-
An effective way to create rhythm between each throw is to roll each dart to your finger tips using your thumb. Place the dart in your open palm and use at least three fingers to grip the dart around the barrel or point. Darts come in different forms; the size and shape of the barrel will affect the amount of grip needed to throw accurately. For example, a smaller barrel will require less grip than a larger one.
Release
-
A reliable release point for your dart throw is crucial to achieving consistency. Depending on your preference, the dart can be released either early or late in the throw. To ensure the dart throws straight a follow-through is important; after you release the dart, your fingers should point at the board or down at the floor.
