How to Wash a Snowboard Jacket

Well waterproofed clothing is essential to keeping you comfortable and safe out on the slopes. Incorrectly washing your jacket or snowboard pants can destroy the waterproofing, putting you in danger of hypothermia at worst or at best a very uncomfortable day. Well maintained gear will serve you perfectly well for many seasons to come.

Things You'll Need

  • Nikwax Tech Wash or similar detergent specifically for waterproof fabric (available where snowboarding jackets are sold)
  • Waterproofing wash (available from the same stores)

Instructions

    • 1

Brush any excess dirt off the jacket. Close all the pockets, zippers and Velcro.

    • 2

Clean out detergent scum from the cup where you normally pour the detergent.

    • 3

Wash the jacket with the Tech Wash or other specialist detergent, setting the machine according to the instructions on the tag of the jacket. If the jacket doesn't have a tag, wash it on the lowest water temperature on the machine. Never use ordinary detergent as it will destroy the jacket's waterproof membrane.

If the jacket needs re-waterproofing, wash it again in Nikwax TX Direct or similar waterproofing wash.

    • 4

Tumble dry the jacket on low or no heat, since heat can also damage the waterproof membrane.
