How to Position a Ski on a Ski Rack

Ski racks come in a range of styles, brands and prices. Some carry skis vertically, some horizontally. Some racks can carry both skis and snowboards, and some are designed for skis only. Whichever solution you select, there are a few simple tips to keep in mind.

    • 1

Identify what options exist for your particular vehicle. Almost every car can accommodate a roof rack, but there are exceptions. For example, a convertible sports car cannot carry skis on the roof. However, these cars may accept a rack on the trunk lid. Very tall SUV's may not be conducive to roof racks either, especially for shorter people. In this case, consider a hitch mount or other design.

    • 2

Choose the rack that will best fit your gear. If you travel with snowboards, for example, do not buy a ski-only rack. If you travel with five or six skis, make sure your rack is not built for four.

    • 3

Mount skis securely in a rack. This means making sure all clasps or locking mechanisms are closed tightly. The decision to place ski tips forward or backward, facing up or facing down is purely a personal preference.

    • 4

Space racks far enough apart that the ski or snowboard is divided roughly into thirds by the rack. If the racks are too far apart or too close together, the ski may not be held tightly enough to prevent it from shifting while the vehicle is in motion.

    • 5

Place skis tightly together side-by-side in a rack. This will allow them to support each other against shifting during transport.

    • 6

Position skis toward the center of the vehicle roof, rather than to the side. This is more aerodynamic and more stable.
