What Is the Advantage of Riding on Twin Tip Skis?

Skis have undergone a tremendous evolution over the past decade. Twin-tip skis are on the cutting edge of skiing as freeride events grow in popularity.

  1. Length

    • Twin-tip skis are sold longer than an all-mountain ski. The extra length is given for both the fact that the twin-tips take up more of the base of the ski. The extra length also allows for more forgiving landings.

    Switch-skiing

    • Simply put, riding switch effectively is nearly impossible on regular all-mountain skis. Twin-tips allow for reverse take-offs and landings that are difficult to impossible on all-mountain skis. The tail is also more rigid than on a regular all-mountain ski, allowing for more stability in switch-riding.

    Waist Width

    • Twin-tips tend to be wider underfoot than most all-mountain carving skis. This extra width in the waist allows for a more stable platform

    Thin Edge

    • Twin-tips don't have as thick of an edge as an all-mountain ski. This means they handle better in the terrain park and glide over rails and boxes easier.

    Powder skiing

    • Twin-tips are generally lighter construction than a standard all-mountain carver. This allows for the skis to float better in powder.
