Spektrum Östra Ski Goggles | Review

Why we chose the Spektrum Östra: The plant-based plastic used here means it’s a product that scores well on sustainability. The look, tech, and feel of the goggles are all premium.

These days, it’s not enough for brands to just make cool gear without thinking about wider issues (i.e. the environmental impact). This is, undoubtedly, a step in the right direction for the industry but it does put manufacturers in a corner. How, for example, do you go about making a pair of sustainably-minded ski goggles? Well, look over here. It’s the Spektrum Östra Bio Premium, an eyewear product that brings ‘green’ to your field of vision (not literally).

The frame of these goggles is born out of a plant-based plastic derived from castor oil. This, and the cleverly implemented injected dye colour in the frame, helps to make it an environmentally-friendly and more sustainable choice for skiers and snowboarders this winter.

As we’ve already mentioned in the introduction, it’s not really enough to just produce good kit these days. We need brands to step up and start thinking about the fact the world is, to put it bluntly, in an absolute state. Spektrum is doing good things in this respect. It’s nice to see. 

Of course, the path to bad products can often be paved with good intentions. We’re happy to report though that that’s not the case here. These goggles have been designed in such a way, and are stacked with the kind of features, that means it’ll perform very well in the place where it matters most – the mountains.

First up, let’s talk about the Carl Zeiss Sonar lens technology. It delivers superior contrast in low light conditions, maximum clarity, and 100% UV protection. The Super-AntiFog Kyohou inner lenses, according to Spektrum at least, provide “140% better fog management than industry standard.” That percentage number is obviously a little bit on the silly side, the kind of stat to make mathematicians pull up a chair at the whiteboard. The feature though does work well.

The magnetic lens exchange system here is intuitive to use and has been implemented into the overall package excellently. The Tri-density face foam provides comfort against the face, and it’s nice to see things like helmet compatibility be considered in the way it so clearly has with the Spektrum Östra.

The multi-layer finish on the lens is classily done, as is the air-flow lens system. The 50mm jacquard polyester strap has a reassuring, premium, ‘feel’ – a feel enhanced by the grippy silicone on the inside. The spare lens with 100% UV protection and inclusion of the microfiber goggle bag round the offering off nicely. 

For £164, you’re getting a top quality pair of ski goggles here. It’s a bit of a hit on the wallet but the premium feel, environmentally-friendly engineering, and clever tech make it an investment well worth considering. In terms of style, the goggles also look properly mint.
